Yōkitsune Taiko is our adult performance group, led by our two musical directors, Kate Taylor and Sam Walker. We have been meeting regularly since April 2017 with the aim of developing a group of players who love taiko and are able to share it with the wider community through performances and workshops.

We meet regularly on Thursday evenings, and if you are interested in seeing us or taking part then please fill in the form here and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Meet the Players

  • Kate Taylor - Musical Director

I have been playing taiko for over a decade (I won’t say how much!). I love performing and composing and have been lucky enough to find a few groups willing to perform my work. Playing as part of Yōkitsune is a real pleasure and it’s amazing to be able to drum with such enthusiastic performers to create some very special moments.

  • Sam Walker - Musical Director

I have been part of the group since we formed in 2017. I also play with Konjaku Daiko in Shropshire. In my regular life I am a classical musician, and play professionally across the UK. You’ll also often see me down at Welford Road watching the rugby.

  • Andy Grainger

My taiko journey began in 2016. I have been practicing with Yōkitsune Taiko since 2022.
Performing with Yōkitsune is really inspiring and energising - sharing taiko, making music, experiencing the tradition and connecting with our community. Great fun that is rewarding in so many ways.

  • Gillian Ramshaw

I was first introduced to taiko by Bullfrog Arts at De Montfort Hall, and I was hooked! When the group formed in 2017, I couldn’t wait to join! I love the energy, focus and sense of team taiko brings with each session.
I work for Leicestershire Music supporting music provision in schools, and lead Fostering Voices, a choir for carers in the city. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, combat and spin classes, or relaxing with a good book!

  • Juliet Whitfield

I have being playing taiko with Yōkitsune since 2017. As Co-founder of Bullfrog Arts I am able to use taiko in my work creating inspirational projects for vulnerable children.

  • Lise Wilson

I first discovered taiko in 2019 and was captivated by the powerful sound and compelling rhythms. I started playing with Yōkitsune in 2022. I love the energy and diversity of the pieces we play and really enjoy playing different styles of taiko. When I’m not drumming, I enjoy singing in a local choir, photography and walking in the countryside.

  • Simon Stokes

I have been delivering my own home grown form of ‘Junk Taiko’ in local schools since encountering Wadaiko Ichiro drummers over 20 years ago. Performing with Yōkitsune is a great opportunity to learn more about the traditional taiko rhythms and connect with the growing taiko community in the UK. After a previous career in teaching I now run Talking Rhythms, delivering rhythms workshops to schools and community groups.

  • Steph Mee

I’ve been playing taiko with two Midlands groups since 2016 and joined Yōkitsune in 2018. However, my performing skills have been honed in the theatre and on film and I have also been busy as a contestant in many TV Game Shows over the past 15 years.

  • Vicki Standen

I have been interested in taiko for many years but never had the chance until I moved to Leicester and found Yōkitsune Taiko. I love the energy our group has and how much fun we have every time we play.
